Basic Advice On First Aid At Work

The contents of this advice on basic first aid is for untrained people to use in an emergency first aid in a work place. It is not a substitute for effective training. First Aid is a skill requiring training and practice.

We recommend you to purchase the comprehensive "First Aid Manual" as authorized by St. John Ambulance, British Red Cross and St. Andrew Ambulance.

YOU SHOULD NOT ATTEMPT TO GIVE MORE THAN THE BASIC FIRST AID

When giving first aid, it is vital that you assess the situation and that you :

  • Take care not to become a casualty yourself while administering first aid (use protective clothing and equipment where necessary).

  • Send for help where necessary. Don't delay.

  • Follow the advice given below.

    • What to do in an emergency 

    • Unconsciousness 

    • Wounds and bleeding 

    • Minor injuries 

    • Suspected broken bones 

    • Burns 

    • Eye injuries 

    • Special hazards 

    • Illness 

    • Record keeping
